Vernon faces a nation wide sugar shortage, but O J Weaver of the James McCord Company says fear and reports from the U S Food Administration drive hoarding. Merchants restrict purchases, many limits at 25 to 50 cents per customer, with several stores nearly out of stock and awaiting shipments.
Vernon received two cars of coal this morning after a mobilized effort led by W F Sterley of the W D C Railroad. A distributers' committee was formed under the mayor and M C Murray to ration coal, curb hoarding, and require Chamber of Commerce certificates for sales while urging nonessential use and church and school conservation.
On Armistice Day November 11 President Poincare of France arrived in London and laid a wreath on the cenotaph in tribute to English sailors and soldiers who died in the war. A French representative who served throughout the war placed the wreath before the Mansion House as crowds listened to speeches and observed the peaceful commemorations.
Miss Dorothy Hicks of Vernon has been elected art editor of the Ward Belmont Hyphen, the weekly student paper at Ward-Belmont College in Nashville. A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. EL Hicks of West Paradise Street, she has studied art about a year and a half and is in her first year at Ward-Belmont after transferring from Crescent College in Noreka Springs, Arkansas. Ward-Belmont is a leading women’s college with enrollment over 500. friends praise her quick rise in months.
William Sehuette of Route 4 reported in Vernon yesterday that he would trim dead limbs from orchard trees and burn them if a coal famine occurred. He says his feed is under shelter and his cotton could yield half a bale per acre if picked, though weather has limited harvesting.
At yesterday's meeting R H Coffee reported two dead trees on his town lots and noted many more have died in the dry years. The Chamber of Commerce was advised wood can be cut in large pastures south of Verpop for fuel. In emergency volunteers may help, and those out of fuel can go to the city hall where a fire will be kept burning to keep them warm.
Vernon residents navigate a coal shortage and rising heating costs as the town adapts with oil heaters and blankets. The county reports 157 men and four women have paid poll tax receipts, with 40 residents in Vernon paying the tax so far. City and county taxes differ, requiring both payments to vote in the general election year 1920.
Jesse J. Miller son of J. P. Miller from near Vernon and Emmett Powell from near Crowell left Tuesday for Decatur Texas to enter Decatur Baptist College. Both graduated from Holcomb Train School last spring and are now juniors at DBC, rooming together.

Children in the James community enjoy holidays as coal scarcity forces the school to stay closed until warmer weather. Miss Gladys Thompson oversees the James School this year as fuel supplies run low.
The local American Legion post will stage a special program on December 27 with a visiting speaker to boost membership. Plans are under consideration by Com John Storey. Details of the DLO are to be announced later as part of broader efforts to grow the local post.
