Millard Newsom to be buried tomorrow in East View
Millard Newsom 63 died early yesterday at his home two miles south of Vernon after a brief illness. A former Alabama transplant, he farmed here and was a druggist at Harrold twenty-five years ago. Funeral services at Baptist church tomorrow at 10 a.m. with Dr E F Lyon. interment East View cemetery. Survived by wife and several children. Mrs Walde and daughter Ramari on visit. Elizabeth Barre also visiting.

Building Boom Promises Growth For Oklaunion
O C Rogers reports Oklaunion’s building boom will improve the town 100 percent. A brick garage and drive in filling station were completed and occupied, and Skinner Hardware Co moved into new brick quarters with an attached filling station. Luther Westerman owns the garage and is optimistic about the outlook. The gin south of the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad is among Wilbarger County’s largest rural gins with a new cotton storage house for pure seed cotton and new equipment.

Knauth Home Struck By Lightning Burns To Ground
The six room house of May Knauth of West Vernon was struck by lightning yesterday, destroying the home and its contents. The family escaped unharmed, with the fire turning the house into a furnace in under ten minutes. Loss estimated at 5000 dollars, partially insured. Mr. Knauth plans to rebuild at once.

Cotton Season Opened in Vernon County
The first bale of cotton for the 1924 season was ginned in Vernon by Melvin McCaleb on the W. M. McCaleb farm four and a half miles west of town. It weighed 401 pounds lint after 1010 pounds of seed cotton were picked Monday afternoon and sold to Bennett & Long for 25 cents per pound. Another bale, 400 pounds, from W. F. Garrett, a J. H. Kincheloe tenant, was ginned at Tone Lockett gin and sold this afternoon. Garrett delivered his bale to Vernon last night, arriving shortly after 9 o'clock, before the Metcalf base was brought to town.

West Wilbarger Street paving on the city limit stretch connects city paving with county road and completes continuous hard surface on the Colorado Gulf highway from Oklahoma to near Tolbert.
