Mrs Rae Ashton Elected National Vice President

Mrs Rae Ashton elected national vice president of the western division of the American Legion Auxiliary at the national convention in Omaha Nebraska. She is past president of the Utah department and served as national committeewoman in 1938, and will return from the meeting later this week.

Tunnel Fire Kills Three on Denver & Salt Lake Line

A tunnel fire west of Denver halted traffic on the Denver and Salt Lake Railway. Three foremen from a five man emergency crew were killed when the cavern caved in during firefighting efforts. The blaze began in the 1800 bore west of Rollinsville and east of Molest. repairs will take an indeterminate period.

Vernal Lions Club Tops District Attendance Record

The Vernal Lions Club reported 93 percent attendance at an Aton luncheon at the Community House, earning first place in the district contest. The club was noted as the third largest in the state, behind Salt Lake and sixteen other clubs.

Governor Maw to Speak at Imperial Hall October 1

Governor H B Maw will discuss Uintah Basin war time and postwar issues at a public meeting in Imperial Hall on Friday October 1 at 8 oclock. He arrives Friday morning and tours Basins undeveloped resources and road projects including Steinaker reservoir Mantis Highway Vernal and Taylor Mountain roads. The tour, guided by Rep B Ho Stringham and Deputy Game Warden Henry Slaugh, will visit asphalt beds and local mines.

Plant Exhibit of Indian Service At Roosevelt Fair

The Indian Service plans a year long Uintah Reservation plant exhibit at the Roosevelt Fair with USIS and Uintah Indian School involvement. Range plants and grasses are showcased for their economic ties to cattle and sheep projects, plus educational information for classrooms.

Armistead buried at Pleasant Grove

Mrs Mary wensen Armistead 76 died at the home of her son Elvin Armistead in Copperton while visiting. Funeral services were held at the Pleasant Grove LDS First Ward chapel. She was born July 3 1887 in Spanish Fork to Niela and Angeline Madsen. She married Addison Coupe Armistead on October 20 1887 in Levan Temple and had lived in Pleasant Grove since then.

Salvage Officials Announce New Scrap Drive Plans

Salvage officials outlined a statewide drive opening October 1 and ending November 15 to collect fats greases and tin. Brick Wood state salvage chairman told local heads in Vernal that tin from two tin cans would be used to make a lube called the spinnette for servicemen in the Pacific. Continued on page four.

State Engineer Tours Water Gauge Sites

State Engineer Ed HL Watson and district engineer Milton T Wilson with USBR geologist Glen D Lasson and Ashley Valley Reservoir engineer Leon P Christensen inspected gauge installation sites on Dry Fork and Ashley Creek headwaters. The probes aim to reveal future projects, test stored waters, measure flow, and assess underground water presence. A cooperative program between state and federal agencies will run as crews dig pits in Dry Fork canyon to locate underground water and seek a compressor for use.

Jaycees Admit 10 New Members At Pine Room Meeting

The Junior Chamber of Commerce welcomed ten new members at a Pine Room Grill Cafe meeting last Wednesday. Services Held for Scott Bills in Salt Lake City

Funeral services were held Friday at the Deseret Mortuary in Salt Lake City for Scott Hilton Bills who died Monday from injuries in an automobile accident. The family friend Walter Caldwell conducted the service with a chorus singing My Father, Whispering Hope, and Goin Home. Interment followed in Salt Lake City Cemetery with pallbearers listed. Attendees included Lydia E Bills, Jay Pack, Abe Harrt, Leon Glen Sr, and Vena Preece.

Vernal Officer Receives Air Medal for Aleutian Duty

Lt Norman Johnson received an air medal from General Butler for combat duty over Kisle while serving 18 months in the Aleutian theater. He was promoted to first lieutenant in June and will train on a P47 or P51 at Mitchell Field as he joins a new squadron, after spending nine months in harsh weather with his parents in Vernal.

State School Officials Visit Vernal for Education Talks

State officials led by Dr Burton K Farmsworth and Charles H Skidmore spent two days in Uintah County meeting with Roosevelt and Alterra faculties and East and Westside elementary teachers. They also visited Uintah High School and Daggett County schools while Dr Leland Stevenson and Mrs Stevenson arrived for a week's visit.

Committee Forms to Plan Vernal Field Museum Project

Uintah War Bond Drive Reaches Fourty Six Thousand

Uintah county reports a four day drive raising 46000 in bond sales led by Vernal City volunteers from Lady Lions and Legion Auxiliary. The drive aims for 216700 with each resident urged to buy bonds. supervisors include R C Cooper C R Hopkins and George P Roth while a large East Uintah committee organizes under Mrs Was and Mrs Eskelson and many local women.

Valley Faces Plan for All-Season Water From Steinaker Reservoir

A proposed reservoir at the mouth of Steinaker Draw would hold 19 000 acre feet to supply Ashley Valley farms year round. The project, costing about 1 million dollars, could be a Wood for Victory or Post War project with government cost sharing. A feeder canal from Ashley Creek would divert winter and spring runoff into the basin, boosting water usage and irrigation for two thirds of the valley.

Enrollment Rises in Uintah County Schools

The Uintah County Board of Education reports 2176 students enrolled across twelve schools this year, up from 2244 last year. High schools Uintah and Alterra show declines. elementary schools mostly rise with varied figures such as Avaton 55 and Naples 160, while Central drops from 890 to 407.
