Access Road Contract Awarded for Damsite

Fire damage report details a blaze at the home of St Argene Cooper near Wert Monday at 1045 am. Vormal Fire Department restrained the fire quickly, with most damage in the center of the house. Cooper's son Larry, burned unplugging a gas line, is in Salt Lake LDS Hospital and improving. Doctors plan skin grafts next week.

Kay Labrum released from Eastern States LDS Mission this week

Kay Labrum son of Mr and Mrs Earl Labrum, has returned from a two year Eastern States LDS Mission. A 6 1/2 mile temporary road contract was let by Utah Bipte Road Commission to James Wardle for 43 050 dollars. Next bids will open on a cable suspension bridge over the river near the dam site to speed winter road work for Vernal to Green River tourism and access to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Parks. Heavy equipment works between Greendale Junction and Cart Creek with a footbridge completed at the damsite for river crossing.

Uintah Stake Conference Attended by 937 on Sunday Morning

Uintah Stake Quarterly Conference drew 937 in the morning and 654 in the afternoon as Salt Lake visiting authorities spoke on thrift education and self discipline. Frank R. Walker presided with choir by Rangely and musical numbers led by Melba Sargent. The afternoon session continued with remarks on education and personal discipline.

Uintah 411 Exhibitors Garner Big Share of Top Ratings at Fair

Tour to Flaming Gorge and Dutch John Scheduled by Chamber

The Chamber of Commerce plans a Monday tour for members and the public to Flaming Gorge and Dutch John. The trip will cover the Vernal project at Steinaker Draw Greendale and the proposed diversion tunnel of Flaming Gorge data on this side of the river, Sheep Creek canyon, Manila and surrounding points.

Oil Shale Prospects Discussed For Vernal Area

Vernal community leaders discussed a possible new oil shale related industry during a chamber luncheon led by Dwight Wetenkamp. Ben Olsen of National Farmers Union Exploration Corp. outlined bids for drill wells and core sampling to assess shale deposits near Bonanza Dragon, with tests to measure overburden, porosity, permeability and potential oil yield per ton.

Wildcat Gas Well Completed at Jack's Canyon

Great Lakes Natural Gas Corp announced the No 1 Stone Cabin wildcat in Carbon County is completed for an absolute open flow of five million cubic feet daily. The gas, with a BTU of 1190, was cased at the Wasatch formation. The well lies in Section 13 Township 12 South Range 14 East near Uintah County. Great Lakes operates a 430000 acre Stone Cabin spread. Los Angeles firm owns 70 percent of the subsidiary. Filer City, Michigan.

Randlett Indian Girl Drowns Near Home in Canal

A two year old Indian girl, Gayla Tuth Jenkins, drowned Tuesday in an irrigation canal near her Randlett home. Funeral services are tentatively set for Sunday at the Randlett Episcopal Church. She was born August 18 1950 in Roosevelt the daughter of Milton and Clara Jenkins and is survived by her parents two brothers three grandparents and a great grandmother. Burial will be in Randlett Episcopal Cemetery under Olpin Mortuary direction.

Experimental Station for Basin Proposed to USA Board of Regents

Initial application for a Uintah Basin Experimental Station as a branch of Utah State University was made at a Utah breakfast meeting in Vernal. Local and state leaders attended as Uintah and Duchesne counties discussed funding, with each county proposing 25 percent of costs and the state supplying the remainder. The project aims to increase Basin economic activity by expanding irrigation and agricultural efficiency amid differing local conditions.

Lost Pair Spend Night in Uintas

TEel Hatch owner of the Plumbin g Co and Max Gelzer son of Mr and Mrs Don Geiger were lost while hiking near Nor ge shoe Park 27 miles northwest of Vernal. A large search by forest service and sheriff’s deputies located them after nightfall with help from a plane.

Masonic Funeral Held for Leo A Allen

Death Claims Husband of Marva Walker

Morris Sorenson 32, of Month at 9 pm, husband of Marva Walker formerly of Vernal, died after brain tumor surgery two years ago. In Mantl Temple he was the order. Survived by wife and four children Debra 7 Neal 5 Jeffrey 3 Ronalle 2, parents Alma and Sorenson of Aurvea, three brothers and two sisters. Funeral services not announced.
