Bryan Defines 16 to 1 in Pittsburg Address
In Pitt and Pittsburgh, Bryan explained the meaning of 16 to 1 during a Monday speech en route to New York for a formal nomination notification. He argued the ratio expresses the debt paying power of gold versus silver, clarifying that the silver dollar is sixteen times the size of the gold dollar and outlines implications for free coinage and mint policy. He dismissed speculative profit ideas and noted mine owners control silver and gold production, stressing that money derives value from minted metal, not producers.
