Narrow Escape From Drowning On Duchess River

John Gen, a prominent local civil engineer, and his wife narrowly escaped drowning while crossing the Duchess River five miles above Nand. Their buggy toppled into a whirlpool as a horse balked, Mr Glenn clung to the buggy, swam to driftwood, and safety was reached. Mrs Glenn, lacking swimming lessons, swam to grab his hand and pull him to safety. the horses drowned, and the couple resumed their journey with help secured. Mrs Glen returned to Vernal, Mr Glenn continued to Provo.

Church leaders warned against political use of meetings

In a Deseret News notice dated Oct 25 1910 church leaders urge Salt Lake stake bishops and ward presidents to refrain from using church meetings or properties for political purposes including temperance or prohibition agendas. County conventions held in Vernal with party focus

All three county conventions met in Vernal last Saturday. Republicans gathered at the courthouse amid excitement as delegates united to counter Vernal influence. Democrats convened at the O ra House with orderly ballots. Socialists met peacefully at Lugene Daniels’ residence.

Flag Day At Uintah State Academy Observed

On Monday October 25 Uintah State Academy held Flag Day with patriotic songs selections by the academy band school yells and speeches from 1 pm to 3 pm. Thos Caldwell Jr led the flag raising and President W H Smart gave an eloquent address as benches filled the campus audience. Old Glory flew over Liberty Peak with a blue white pennant as Wilcox School granted a half holiday to attend. The day ended with a bat call contest where the ninth grader beat the tenth 20 to 18.

Firefighters Reach Basement Fire With Difficult Access

Fire crews faced heavy smoke and obstructed passages as they battled a basement blaze between closely flanked buildings. Despite the challenging entry, the department located the seat of the fire and brought it under control by 2:80 pm.
