Vernal Chamber of Commerce urges county officials to plan a new county building as population growth threatens overcrowding in the current structure. Herbert Park Game Warden Fred reports elk and deer migration aided by light snow in Bear Mountain area. The hunters will begin on November 29 with the opening of deer and elk hunts in Browns Park and surrounding zones.

Carl Holley of Salt Lake City is named Scout Executive for the Ainish Basin area, succeeding Grant Mace who moves to the Price district. Holley, born in Benita Mission, has lived in Salt Lake City and studied at the University. His tasks include growing the basin group with about seven hundred members and organizing local scouting efforts.

Henry Merkley, a longtime farmer and livestock man from Vernal, Utah, died Sunday at Uintah County Hospital. Born December 13, 1877, in Cedar Vale, Utah County, he lived in the Umigh Basin since youth and retired due to ill health. He married Susan Hudgote in Vernal on December 21, 18XX. Survived by three sons and two daughters, burial at Jensen Cemetery. Continuous fire hazards persist in Uintah County amid drought conditions.
Seven automobile accidents were reported in Uintah County during the week, totaling 3160 in property damages. A Jensen man, Lloyd A Bicknell, claimed a hit‑and‑run on Highway 40 five miles west of Jensen at 7:45 p.m. on November 18, after passing a truck and forcing him off the road. Damage estimated at 300. Another crash Tuesday at 6:19 p.m. involved Francis A Calerow, 30, Bridgeland, whose car was struck by Kim Knobbe, 31, en route to Camp Stonewell, 244 miles east of Vernal on Highway 40. Damages to Calerow’s car about 150. Knobbe’s about 300. Knobbe was driving Elmer My. For 24, Idaho Falls, on Highway 40 twelve miles west of Vernal. Continued on Page 8.
In a recent meeting in Long Beach Utah water users chose Hugh Colton to serve as director of the River Commission. John Erickson of New Mexico State Engineers was named chairman to succeed the late Judge Clifford Stone of Denver. Another Commission meeting is scheduled for December 20 in Denver.
