Sagebrush to Grass Seeding Boosts Range Value 1200 Percent
Foresters report experimental reseeding across Utah and the Intermountain West raises range land value by about 1200 percent. Projects at Upper Valley, Dixie, and Fishlake forests replace sagebrush with productive grasses, doubling livestock capacity and prompting private landowners to join seeding efforts.
Lost Creek pasture test in Utah shows crested wheatgrass trial
In 1942 Forest Service workers planted 500 acres in Lost Creek near Fishlake National Forest with a mix of crested and slender wheatgrass, smooth brome and mountain brome at 322 dollars per acre. The project, part of a cooperative range pasture test on 2700 acres, involved 27 pastures and collaboration with Soil Conservation Service and Utah Agricultural Experiment Station. Forty-nine cattle on the test plot gained weight faster than those in sagebrush. Foresters note grassland can graze a cow for a month per acre, while 10 to 15 acres of sagebrush are needed for the same grazing.
