Ute Delinquency and Child Neglect Examined by Interagency Group
A six nation committee including Federal State and Indian officials will study juvenile delinquency and child neglect on the Ulintah Ouray Reservation. The panel met at Ft Duchesne to seek Ute Tribe preferences for solutions. Members include John S Boyden Jack K Witherspoon Francis McKinley John Farr Larson Judge Paul Keller and Glen Duggins. Larson noted these problems have endured for more than 15 years.

The meeting noted a service gap for Ute children and neglect cases on the reservation. It was agreed the state has jurisdiction over school attendance, the US district attorney over major crimes, and tribal courts may handle petty violations. Mr. Boyden said the tribe resists ceding sovereignty, but facilities are limited. A list of questions for the Utes will be prepared.
