Boat Regatta Here Sunday Promises Thrill
A new kind of thrill for the Vernal area, boat races, will be enjoyed Sunday at Stein aker Reservoir. The lake will be closed to regular boating, fishing, swimming and other activities throughout the day by order of Utah State Parks Commission. Registration will take place at the pits, closing at 0:30 am, and the first race is scheduled to get under way at 11:30 am, with the final one about 5:30 p.m. Nine different classes of boats are scheduled. Drivers are professionals and all members of American Power Boaters Assn. Boats obtained at these races will determine entries for the finals to be raced this fall to determine the championship of the U. S. and then the world championship, REGION 18, of which Utah is one of the states, has two boats and drivers that hold world championships and who likely will be here Sunday. Wes Knudsen of Provo recently won the world championship for Class B inboard Thunderbolt in southern Nevada with a speed of more than 116 mph. Classes are determined by the size and type of the boat and the displacement of the motor. RACES WILL be run in two five lap heats for each class for more than a mile of an oval course. If there’s a different winner of each heat, the fastest time designates the final placing. There will be a total of 18 heats for the day and possibly more in the event of finals place ties. Some boats are capable of speeds in excess of 115 mph. Pits will be open to the public to view the boats and drivers and ask questions if desired. The regatta is sponsored by Vernal Boating Club and Salt Lake Power Boat Club.
