Relocation Program Moves Indians to Cities Across Nation
Relocation officers operate in St. Louis, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland while Ute Indians relocate mainly to California and Colorado, with Denver favored. The program claims voluntary participation and aims to help Indians gain employment away from reservations, though critics say it erodes land, culture, and self-sufficiency. Advocates cite success in adjusting to non-Indian communities, while critics warn of assimilation harms and potential urban hardship. Financial aid covers transport, subsistence during training, living allowances for 24 months, health services, and tool purchases for apprenticeships.
