Grand Junction Eyes First Class Auto Road to Uintah Basin
Grand Junction Chamber of Commerce discussed a plan to build a year round auto road into the Uintah Basin to spur trade. Oil shale wealth and three early wells exist there with an oil refinery under construction by Utah Oil Shale company. The route would join the Midland trail near the Colorado Utah line, pass Tom Larsen ranch, over Book Cliffs to Ouray and Vernal, and could cost about 500 per mile to finish to the summit. Local merchants and officials urged rapid study and funding, with road men to assess costs after spring.
