Ouray Valley Irrigation stockholders set new office HQ

At the annual Ouray Valley Irrigation meeting in Verna stockholders voted to move headquarters from Vernal to Avalon with plans to open a local office in coming months. They discussed expanding cultivation on 16000 to 20000 acres and attracting settlers, with officers elected: Jesse Brough president, Ray E Dillman vice president, L C Wall, Bert Hovey and M Larson directors.

Decrease in Snowfall on Uintah Range Reported

February 1928 readings at various elevations indicate lower snow depths than February 1927, with many sites reporting substantial declines due to relocated stations and variable conditions.

Funeral Services for Little NeRee Stringham

A sixteen month old girl NeRee Stringham daughter of Ray and Vera Stringham died Sunday night at home. Funeral held at Vernal First Ward chapel Thursday with Haller Witbeck in charge. The service featured flowered drapery, a white casket, musical selections by Tetlas Shimmin Thomas trio and solos by Edith Shimmin Frayer and Howard Mendenhall. Remarks by H Walter Woolley Harmon Sowards and Halel Veitbeck. Benediction by J Clive Davis and grave by Marion Shater.

Funeral Held for Twin Son of Mr and Mrs Merkley

Funeral services for the infant twin son of Joseph and Luella Merkley were conducted at Asher Merkley’s home on Saturday March 10 with Bishop James H Wallis presiding. The service featured a quartet, prayers by Harmon Gowards, and talks by Ellis Merkley and Wallis on LDS doctrines. Ouray Valley Farmer Killed by Falling Timber at Gilsonite Mine

A E Jenkins of Leota was instantly killed at the Littl Emma Mine near Watson Tuesday morning when a heavy timber struck his skull. Survived by a wife and seven children, he and his wife, natives of England, had lived in the Uintah Basin and filed on a Ouray Valley homestead. He worked timbering to support his family. his body was moved to Vernal and Leota for services.

Services for Prominent Ashley Ward Woman Held Here by Father Collins

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Vernal Second ward chapel for Mrs. Katherine Feltch of Ashley Ward. Father Collins of East Lake City led a Catholic service with prayers and songs by May Jorgensen. Bishops Karl Preece and Hyrum Calder spoke on her life as a mother and neighbor. Interment followed at Vernal cemetery with the grave dedicated by Father Collins. Relatives from Yampa Cola and Denver attended and departed Tuesday.

Strawberry Road Closed By State Road Commission

The State Road Commission ordered Strawberry Road from Heber City to Ducatone closed for a week or two due to an unfinished sixteen mile forest project and poor surfacing by Cedar Construction. Traffic is being turned back and only limited night travel with teams is allowed as crews work to stabilize the worst stretches.

Death comes suddenly to Jensen resident Albert L Wilkins Jr

Albert Levi Wilkins Jr of Jensen died suddenly March 10 at Vernal hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services were held in Jensen chapel with a large turnout of relatives and friends. He was born January 13 1892 in Jensen and leaves a wife Leafy Fletcher and six children Ruth Ruby Lavelle Lula Eugene and Helen plus his parents and many siblings. Burial followed at Jensen cemetery with services conducted by local church leaders.
