Asphalt is King in Uintah County Gilsonite Mine
The Gilsonite mine near Fort Duchesne, about twenty four miles from Vernal, is the region's wealth source. Operated by a St Louis syndicate led by O A Baxter, it yields seven to eight tons daily. The mineral resembles glossy coal and is used for insulators and underground wire coverings. The mine features a small community with a store and two saloons, and miners work to avoid dust inhalation.
