Legion Chooses Vernal for Fall District Meet
Two hundred Legionnaires and Auxiliary members from Utah district 5 gathered in Helper for reports and officer elections for the coming year. Vernal was chosen as the convention site for the district. Key officers were elected and auxiliary leaders endorsed retiring district president Mrs. Earl Jones for first vice president of the department. War bond purchases by eight of ten posts were noted. Mrs Jessie M Wall and family traveled to Provo for niece Winona Massey’s Brigham Young University graduation. Massey plans to teach in the Uinton district next fall.

Friends gathered at John Nielson's Naples home to mark his 84th birthday. Born 1858 in Lolland Denmark, he immigrated with family aboard the Banpeté emigrant train arriving Salt Lake October 19, 1868. The Nielsen family settled in Cottonwood, Bear River, then Ashley Valley, with civic and church involvement in Naples ongoing.

Funeral services for William Clinton Marshall were held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Naples Ward Chapel with Bishop LaVell Manwaring presiding. Nettie Richens Dies Following Long Illness
Funeral services for Nettie C Richens 75 pioneer of 1854 were held in Vernal with Bishop Calder presiding. She died June 8 after a cancer illness. she lived in Vernal since 1920 after moving from Maeser and Naples Ward. Surviving are two sons C Leroy Richens and Carl R Richens, nine grandchildren, four sisters and three brothers.

Fishing Season Opens in Utah Sunday
Utah anglers expect a record turnout as the fishing season starts Sunday across streams and lakes including the Uintas. Beavers were washed from some dams by heavy winter runoff while Brook trout stocking adds 120000 fish to north side waters. Union Oil Test Well Is Abandoned
Union Oil abandoned the Cottonwood Springs test well 11 miles west of Vernal after reaching 2222 feet. No oil was found. a slight water reading occurred. A plug from 2222 to 2040 feet failed, and the 1250 foot shot off was plugged and abandoned. Heavy black tar sands were found but showed negligible overall yield.

Major Colton Promoted At Fort Lewis In Army Engineer Regiment
Vernal lawyer and National Guard officer Colton, stationed at Fort Lewis Washington, has been promoted to major in the 115th Engineers. His rapid Army rise began with service as captain of Co B and later posts at San Luis Obispo Redding and Los Angeles. Lions Club Views Convention Movie At Wednesday Meeting
At the Vernal Lions Club luncheon at the Orit Cafe, W A Blair of Roosevelt showed colored movies of the Bi George district convention. President Elect Tiranela Felich presided and a report on the St George convention was given. The club decided to petition Utah's congressional delegation against a gas rationing measure while RC Cooper urged continued support for the War Bond drive.

Ward Pearce White 81 a Vernal carpenter and contractor died June 3 after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 00 p m in the Vernal Beok and ward chapel with Bishop Owen Slaugh presiding and Rev J W Mailwood assisting. Mr White had been in the Congregational Church 7 years and had worked on many early Vernal residences and structures. Burial followed at the home with floral tributes and music by a church quartet and soloists.

Fire Fighting School Held at Green Lakes
The Forest Service hosted a three day fire fighting school at Green Lakes in Ashley National Forest from Monday to Wednesday. Uintah Chapter of the American Red Cross gave first aid demonstrations on day one, day two covered firefighting strategy and tactics, and day three featured a dummy fire and crew organization demonstrations. Attendees included representatives from Forest Service Grazing Service Indian Service National Park Service Bell Conservation Service and the American Red Cross. A scientific team led by Dr. Seteler examined ancient Puebloan remains along Yampa Canyon during a ten day river expedition piloted by Has Hatch. The mission, planned with the Bureau of Reclamation, included experts from Dinosaur National Monument and the Smithsonian to assess sites potentially impacted by Echo Park dam construction.
