Crowds and workers observe activity as the Ute Tribe’s No 1 well north of Ft Duchesne begins setting seven inch pipe to reach production. Oil shows were reported between 9357 and 9391 feet with a later flow test deemed extremely encouraging by geologist Vern E. Farmer Jr. Conditions are described as very favorable for potential production.

Hotel Purchases Champion at Uintah Basin Livestock Sale
Officers, contestants, buyers and spectators attended a three day Uintah Basin Livestock show in North Salt Lake. Despite rain, crowds praised the quality with champions named from Vernal and Roosevelt. Grand champion steer sold to Hotel Vernal for 44 cents a pound and Miss Marlea Smith retained her reserve champion baby beef for the Intermountain show in Salt Lake City.

Postmasters from Utah towns gathered in Vernal for the annual Utah chapter of the National Association of Postmasters. The three day program included a picnic, a tour of the oil field, a public banquet, and talks by notable speakers including Governor J Bracken EE. LeRoy Kay and others. A Caldwell No 2 well near Jensen showed gas and mud flows as depth reached 2830 feet with mud pressures noted.

Rodeo officials announced improvements at the rodeo grounds including a new seating layout and relocated chutes with plans for better grandstand views. The queen contest drew many entrants and organizers urged more contestants, while street riding may begin when weather permits. Two Los Angeles men were injured in a separate car crash near Artesia, Utah.

Ike Newton 69 Dies in Local Hospital
Funeral services were held for F I Newton 69 owner of Newton Bros Co who died Saturday night in a local hospital of a heart ailment. A Vernal resident since 1902 he and his brother Bill founded a saddlery. He was born June 20 1879 in Silver Reef and survived by two daughters and three grandchildren. Burial was in Fairview cemetery Maeser.
