Legion Not Military Body Favors Small Regular Army
National headlines report the American Legion clarifies its civilian status while supporting a mixed force of a small regular army and a large citizen army. The plan includes universal training, civilian control, and options for enlistment in the National Guard with three-year commitments and selective service for youth between eighteen and twenty one. A large citizen army would accompany a limited regular force to meet emergencies with reinforced officer training and protections against military caste. Unionists in Ames Iowa express support for ex service bonuses, urging action and service acknowledgment.
