Sanpete county reports flourishing crops with a large harvest while Bear River claims Oliver Smith 24 drowns near Collinston. Utah braces for rail expansion and harvests in several counties as Elocutionists convene in New York and locals face tragedies from suicides to accidents and banking irregularities.
In a heated exchange over a prior remark about Solicitor Penfold Senator Bailey of Texas assaulted Senator Beveridge of Indiana after adjournment. Other senators intervened as Bailey dragged Beveridge by the throat risking further blows and disrupting the chamber.
Jessie Morrison, daughter of H. Morrison, is found guilty of second degree murder for killing Clara Wiley Caatie with a razor eight days after Olin Castle’s marriage, in Eldorado Kansas. The first trial ended in a disagreement and the second yielded manslaughter with a five year term. She received a new trial in February.
Dinamite exploded in a Leon Kansas post office safe on Sunday morning as suspects tried to blow it open. The postmaster was seriously injured and two others reportedly hurt though details are scarce.
Sheriff A. J. Bullard and Deputy Cogburn of Roger Mills County Oklahoma were killed in a gun battle with three thieves during an attempted arrest. The fight lasted about twenty minutes in the northeast county region as the outlaws fled uninjured despite a fierce defense by the officers.
Nevada representative Newlanda outlines a bill that funds irrigation automatically from land sale revenues. He notes at least 150 million dollars will be available in thirty years and current and prior land sales yield 6 million dollars, with 3 million per year thereafter. The plan is safeguarded to prevent contracts without fund availability and to curb land monopoly.
Jesse James body unearthed after twenty years from the Excelsior Springs yard and reburied in Kearney Missouri beside his father and wife Zerelda Samuels. Funeral rites followed with pallbearers from Quantrill era and Jesse James Jr. among witnesses. Small crowd attends the family ceremony.
Sunday morning a Colorado Midland excursion train from Cripple Creek down Utepasa struck a broken rail. Seven cars piled into a shapeless wreck. Francis M English a Colorado Springs musician was killed. About thirty passengers injured, three or four probably fatally. The car that left the site went over an embankment north of the track carrying 371 passengers. Miraculous escapes prevented a larger death toll.
Admiral Killick of the Haytien fleet lands troops to back General Firman at Petia after refusing to recognize authorities. He threatens to bombard Cape Haytlen. Consular representatives protest actions. A bishop and foreign consular delegation try to mediate but fail.
Official reports show Manila with 1,740 cholera cases and 1,385 deaths while the province tallies 9,444 cases and 7,038 deaths. Insular health commissioner Lisut-Col Louis M Maus says probable province deaths may reach 2,000, but records are unavailable.
William P. Kissinger of Eugene Oregon killed William Gerner and then shot himself at Pearl Idaho. Ada Horn Garner formerly of Oregon was shot behind the ear after Kissinger seized her. Gerner rushed to the scene and died. Witness Alice Loster heard the event and saw the killings.
Cabinet approves terms of an amnesty proclamation to be issued on July fourth. The plan seeks to restore peace by transferring from military to civil rule and granting liberty and full amnesty to political offenders including Aguinaldo, with some exceptions in Mindanao.
Congressman Lacy introduces a bill to reform homestead laws requiring each land entry or purchase application to include a sworn affidavit by one or more persons verifying land class character and disposability under the applicable law. The oath may be taken before a deputy clerk of a court of record and false swearing on material facts would be perjury.
Delegates from all silk industry branches in Paterson New Jersey voted against a general strike in sympathy with dyers’ helpers. The tally was 12 against, 6 in favor, with the Socialist Trade and Labor Alliance abstaining. Weavers and others idle for a week are expected to return to looms with traders unions’ approval.

Walter George Liwin a Pu eblo Cooks and Waiters union member was killed while picketing the River Ride restaurant at 2 North Uolon avenue. Police Officer Joseph I Shepard was wounded as Jacob Dodgson and others connected to Kate Dodson and her sons confront the strike. The incident ended in a shooting during the boycott.
Mrs C A Betts and her 15 year old sister Frances Curran were severely burned when a lamp in a chafing dish exploded at Overett Washington. Frances Curran died four hours later. Mrs Betts, wife of Dr C A Betts, escaped the flames by fleeing to a neighbor’s home as the house burned.
Congress' early session focuses on conference reports for sundry civil and military bills. House rejects Senate amendments to the navy bill over submarine torpedo boats. Philippine civil government amendments include US Supreme Court appeal and stock prohibition for a local corporation. Senate clips discuss pure food and tariff arguments as calendar business proceeds.
The House approved the Philippine Civil Government bill nearly as sent by the committee in a party line vote 14 to 17 with one exception. A minority substitute for a temporary government was defeated 95 to 1. The conference report on the lath canal bill was adopted 262 to. The Senate acted briefly approving the conference report and a major deficiency bill amid protest over Buffalo and Charleston expositions funding. The measure also provided compensation for the president and covered illness and death pay.
The session opens with clearance of miscellaneous items. Senator Moon of Tennessee objects to unanimous consent until allowed to address a bill granting the Indian territory a territorial form of government. The District of Columbia appropriation is approved along with other measures. A joint resolution seeks 850000 for a prison-ship martyrs monument at Fort Green.
The house and senate clash over the general deficiency and pav al appropriation bills as a conference report on the DC bill is sent to the president for signature. Horton v Butler election seat declared vacant by a party line vote with Butler denied his seat. Senate debate over Morgan Alabama resolution on Panama Canal stockholders and protection for them in French courts. Conference report on the deficiency bill partially agreed with Hale Allison and Teller named conferees.
The conference report on the Philippine civil government was adopted by a strict party vote except for Aff McCall of Massachusetts who sided with Democrats. The general deficiency bill passed after a protracted fight, the Senate amendments to fund the Buffalo exposition and the Hawaiian award were approved, and many bills moved under suspension. Senator Elkins urged Cuban annexation while Senator Platt and Hanna urged restraint. Also passed was a bill granting Rear Admiral Solley pay and allowances on the active list.
The Congress session is practically closed after seven months of activity. Many general issues have been acted upon or will become law, with exceptional business activity and broad public interest. Only the Catan reciprocity bill remains among large subjects unresolved.
