Missionary calls require draft-clearance for young church members
Church leaders clarified that prospective missionaries aged 19 and 20 must obtain written clearance from draft boards before accepting a call. The policy, announced by David O. McKay, aims to align missionary service with military requirements. Some farewells were postponed pending clearance, while in training missionaries in the Lake Mission Home are unaffected.

Government bean sorting machine scans beans for conformity
Washington reports a TV guided bean sorter that screens 3780 beans per minute and ejects those not matching a normal pattern. At Chester B. Brown plant in Gering Nebraska about 100 machines are in use and can sort beans of any color including pintos. The black eyed pea thwarts the system as its eye like marking confuses the device.
