Boost Crop Profits From Alfalfa, Agent Tells Chamber
Uintah County Agricultural Agent Ben Lindsay told the Vernal Chamber of Commerce that doubling alfalfa production could raise profits sevenfold. He showed tables where two tons per acre yielded a net $4.38, while four tons per acre produced $29.83 per acre, and cited similar gains for corn silage barley oats wheat and pasture. Lindsay proposed a county alfalfa seed crop to meet rising fertilizer demand and noted efforts to expand markets as housing on former farmland grows. He said a visit to a Utah sugar beet plant would explore a similar crop, and reported many farms have test plots with 180 alfalfa varieties. County Commander Harold McKee added water shortages had hindered fertilization but future supply looks brighter.
