Green River Oil Shale Beds May Yield Vast Reserves
A new gas combustion oil shale recovery process developed by the U S Bureau of Mines in Rifle Colorado shows promise for commercial production from Green River shale deposits in Utah Colorado and Wyoming Pilot models report over 95 percent recovery from shale The process uses underground rooms blasted rock crushed and heated in retorts to yield gasoline diesel and other products Utahs shale reserves are vast with estimates of over 190 5 million barrels per square mile The formation dates to Middle Eocene and was laid down in ancient Lake Uinta and Lake Gosiute Recent mining and processing advances have lowered costs toward competitive levels while private schedules for commercial shale development remain indeterminate
