Gilsonite Boom Tied to Bonanza Utah

Utah's Gilsonite monopoly valued at about a billion dollars. The Bonanza plant, 47 miles southeast of Vernal, costs $250,000 and powers a town built for miners. Estimates show a 32 million ton reserve, enough for centuries, with the oil and gas pipeline links and a rush of trucks to Craig, Colorado.

Guard Training Program Increased By Emergency

A Vernal Exponent feature explains National Guard training expanded due to world affairs. The program adds six weekend periods and a extra week at camp beyond the usual forty eight two hour sessions plus fifteen days of summer camp. Training occurs at local armories with uniforms worn during sessions. First hour covers general military topics while second hour trains specialists such as cooks drivers mechanics radio operators and clerks and includes weapons and equipment practice. Summer camp remains an option.
