Ashley Elk Herd Makes Good Growth
Elk herd in the Ashley Forest has grown enough that motorists report seeing individuals and groups along roads. Game Warden Slaugh says continued growth could permit a local elk hunt soon. Since 1642, elk were augmented from Mt Nebo, with 8 added to the north slope then moved to the south slope near Barker Spring. In 1942 ten bull permits were issued in Greendale to scatter the herd, and 1843 brought eight more to the same area. This month 15 cows and 3 calves were released from Mount Nebo near Mona onto the south slope.
