War Cuts Into Sales of Utah Gilsonite
The European war has cut Raven Mining Company of Utah gilsonite sales by 36 to 40 percent. Normal monthly production estimates range from 600 to 1100 tons depending on sales demand. Uintah Basin operations employ 25 to 50 workers, with Aly Mining run by two shafts 1500 feet apart and connected at 800 feet, about 1000 feet deep. Equipment includes hoists, compressors, diesel backup, screening and washing plants, and a melting plant for ore blending. Gilsonite, akin to asphalt, is mainly used in paints and finishes, with Elaterite and Wirtullite found nearby. Raven operates from Chicago offices with Lindley as president.
