Improving Business Conditions
By N. J. Meagher cashier of Bank of Vernal. The 1919 drought and heavy livestock losses hit Uintah Basin stockmen last fall. Banks advanced feeding funds during a brutal winter as hay rose to 30 to 40 dollars a ton. Sheepmen faced high corn costs and long transports. The winter curbed production and livestock sales yielded little revenue. Government deflation sought to ease living costs with persuasion and policy, but failed. The Federal Reserve urged loans for essentials only and withdrew credit from speculators, triggering a nationwide business depression as prices fell and retailers and manufacturers cut back.
