Free use permits for Vernal Ranger District fuelwood

Ranger Vaughn Francis reminds the public of firewood availability on the Vernal Ranger District of the Ashley National Forest amid energy shortages. Free-use permits for dead and down wood for personal fuel use are available at 650 North Vernal Avenue Vernal Utah. PSC approves Utah Gas pass through increase

The Public Service Commission approved an $83.0 percent pass-through increase for Utah Gas Service Co to offset higher wholesale charges from Northwest Pipeline Co and Altonah Plant. The rate hike, effective Jan 2, followed a December tentative approval and a December hearing. A March 1 hearing on a $200,000 exploration allowance was continued after notice issues.

Tourists survive Red Cloud Loop mishap in Utah mountains

Louis Legac and Bil Locke, both of Oklahoma City, spent a weekend in the Uinta Mountains after choosing the Red Cloud Loop. Their car became stuck on Dry Fork Canyon and they endured a cold night before reaching Trout Creek Rangers Station eight miles away. They cooked rice with bouillon and eaten applesauce, then were aided by Ranger Mike Bergfeld near Twin Parks.

City sewer to get TV inspection and infiltration study

Vernal City undertakes a $53,000 project with Community Consultants to use internal TV inspection and monitoring to analyze excessive groundwater infiltration in the sewer system. Uintah Engineering and Land Surveying assist as subcontracts. EPA funds 76 percent, city 24. The goal is to reduce infiltration by up to one third, extend plant life, and assess upg rade options and costs for future growth.

Bomb hoax at Uintah High forces brief evacuation

Uintah High School received a pay phone call warning of a bomb set to go off at 1 p.m. Principal Bert Gividen said the building was evacuated for about 30 minutes while a search was conducted. no device was found. He also noted eight broken windows from prior weekend vandalism and announced no school Friday during the state wrestling tournament.

Brown's Park road priority status sought

Daggett County officials led by Commissioner Albert H. Neff urged the Utah Transportation Commission in Salt Lake City to grant Brown's Park Road in Daggett County first priority for future Federal Lands Highway funds. Transportation officials outlined FLH funding requests for Boulder to Grover Road in Wayne and Garfield counties for 1877-78, with a public hearing on the environmental impact statement planned for fall.

Slayer suspect pleads innocent due to illness

Artie Duckett 33 of Tucson pleaded innocent to first degree murder in the Feb. 4 shooting of a Vernal truck driver. Authorities say a bystander who identified as a police officer shot Jerry Chew after a minor crash in Rock Springs Wyoming. Duckett held without bond for psychiatric evaluation at State hospital in Evanston.
