State Senate Debates Juvenile Detention Bills
Utah lawmakers discuss Senate Bills 21 and 34 on juvenile detention funding and county versus state control. SB 21 would require 50 percent state funding for a detention home with state standards, while SB 34 would centralize responsibility, needing an $825,000 appropriation. Rural counties report few juvenile delinquents. urban counties drive referrals. A sifting committee will push bills toward a second reading amid hearings and travel notes from legislators.
