Vernal Police Strike Largest Drug Raid Yet

Sunday afternoon raid across seven Vernal residences led to eight arrests and six arrest warrants. About 19 officers from Vernal City PD, Uintah County SO and Utah Highway Patrol participated. The operation targeted major drug pushers dealing quantities, not users, and recovered drugs and paraphernalia. Suspects named include David William Tait, 19. William Robert Harmer, 26. Tommy Gurule, 18. Richard Allen Grammer, 22. Kent Louis Banks, 19. Darryl C. Richardson, 13. Leland D. Campbell Jr, 23. and Mary Katherine Little, 23, with charges ranging from possession to distribution of a controlled substance.

Uintah County Vernal Fire Dept Reports 171910 Loss

Uintah County Vernal City Volunteer Fire Department answered 87 fire alarms during 1976, totaling 171910 in property loss. Residential homes dominated. nineteen homes and nine trailer houses sustained the largest loss at 120850. Vernal City logged 28 alarms for 43160 in losses. Uintah County had 59 alarms for 128750. Chief Dale Slaugh and secretary Delmer Lane signed the annual report.

Dinosaur models eyed for Utah state parks expansion

The Natural Resources Appropriations Committee backed nearly 1 million dollars for increased state parks workload including 190 000 to buy a 13 piece fiberglass dinosaur model collection to be placed near Vernal Utah at the Fieldhouse Museum. Delbert Porter of Orderville sculpted the replicas and will deliver assemble relocate and repair any damages at the asking price. Senator Glade M. Sowards urged the funding saying it would educate visitors and boost tourism while protecting the parks investment. The proposal awaits action by the Executive Appropriations Committee before general approval.

Home energy workshop at Lamplighter Inn discussed reducing bills

The Lamplighter Inn hosted an arr energy workshop where Manilyn Noyes of Utah State University outlined that 60 percent of home energy goes to heating and cooling. Winterizing, insulation, storm doors and windows, and caulking could cut usage by 30 15 and 10 percent respectively, with the Some Energy Savers Workbook guiding five simple steps.

Tyzack Dam bid below engineer's estimate

A Denver firm Brown & Root Western led the bids for the Tyzack Dam and Reservoir contract in Utah. The engineer's estimate was 13.99 million dollars. Brown & Root Western bid 12.79 million, with Washington Construction Co. top bidder at 19.26 million and Green Construction Co. near 12.98 million.

Vernal Chamber weighs gas hook up deposit issue

Vernal Area Chamber of Commerce board heard Utah State official Ray L. Pruett explain Utah Gas Service Company’s $120 deposit for gas hook ups. He said the fee covers final billing after a customer leaves, based on triple the prior peak bill, with possible refunds after 12 months of on time payments. PSC hearings may be held in Vernal if requested.

February Snow Surveys Show Record Lows Across Uinta Regions

US Soil Conservation Service reports February snow depths and moisture content at multiple sites including Spirit Lake 15 inches of snow with 2.9 inches water and Grizzly Ridge 9 inches with 1.6 inches water. Rain gauge catches to Feb 1 range from 16 percent to 33 percent of averages, signaling sustained drought conditions.

Curfew Enforced in Uintah Basin Juvenile Ordinance

Law Enforcement Agencies will strictly enforce a curfew starting Tuesday February 1. Juveniles under 17 face 10 30 p m or 12 30 a m limits with guardian presence optional. Officers will issue simplified citations, fines likely rising on further offenses, and may detect alcohol or drug violations during enforcement.

Vernal Avenue crash kills local woman

An intersection crash on Vernal Avenue and 2nd North Street fatally injured 72 year old Katie Haslam Horrocks of Vernal. The vehicle she drove westbound failed to stop at a sign and was broadsided by a Parker Drilling semi driven by Jerry M. Chew 28. Horrocks died later in Salt Lake City hospital from severe head injuries. The crash marks the first highway fatality of the year in the area.
