Vernal youth Ore Nelson 16 of BUUnga Afontana son of Mr and Mrs Des Nelson, formerly of Vernal, gains early fame in science. He won a junior scientific award for a theory on harmless bacteria secretions forming a cure for unnamed diseases. His lab began under a tree in a Vernal wheat field. now valued at thousands. He plans a 24 member winter mountain expedition to Mt Assiniboine in the Canadian Rockies. He has discovered several variable stars and is building a six inch Newtonian telescope with a Pyrex mirror.

Mrs Sarah Ashton of Randlett Dies at 19

Mrs Sarah Ashton of Randlett dies Monday after a paralytic stroke at age 19. Born in Liverpool England she married George Ashton in 1902 and moved to Colorado. They settled in Randlett until his death ten years ago. A nephew Friedrich Leber and Mrs Leber of Toledo Ohio attend the private funeral in Randlett Sunday at 11 with Rev W J Howes officiating. Mrs Ashton was a member of St Mary Episcopal Church in Provo.

Ashley woman Holly dies at home after long illness

Mrs Jessie E Schmid reports Holly daughter of Ed ward M and Fanny Mae Tatum Schmid of Ashley died Tuesday at the family home born March 10, 1906 in Montrose. She married C F Holly of Durango Coto and lived in Aztec NM. Survived by one son Francis Eugene and two brothers Earl Schmid and Lawrence, stationed with the medical corps at Port Arthur. Funeral arrangements pending word.

Uintah County Calls 22 Men In December

Twenty two Uintah County men have been called to service in December, per county board secretary Chellus Caldwell. Reclamation Service Girds For Postwar Decentralization Plan

Searle Takes Over Texaco Station and Fur Agency

Woody Searle of Craig takes over management of Pauls Texaco Service as owner Paul Batty serves in the armed forces. Batty plans to enter service in February and will focus on his ranch in the interim. The station continues under the same name and Searle also runs the Northwestern Hide and Fur agency as the Searle Hide and Fur Company with warehouses in Craig Meeker and Vernal. Searle, formerly of Vernal, has three years in the fur business.

A fire destroyed a three room home of Ren Samuels Monday night. family evacuated, insurance partly covering losses. Lions Distribute Christmas Boxes To Valley Families

The Lions Club Christmas cheer committee distributed over one hundred boxes with groceries and toys to valley families on Christmas Eve. The effort was aided by the Lady Lions, the Legion Auxiliary, and the Spy Scouts. Committee members included Russell Montgomery as chairman, George P Roth, Russell Keetch, J Harold Reader, J Ferran Hacking, Clair Hopkins, and Orion Jones, with The Fashion Cleaners providing a truck and driver.

Knife Wielding Fight Leaves Men Wounded In Hotel Dispute

A dispute at the Hepittane Hotel ended with Milhead using a knife on Thompson, causing eight dangerous wounds in a night of drinking and supper with Millread in the rear of the David Witmer tin shop. Whitmey aided Thompson who was taken to a doctor by Night Marshall Corless. An investigation by officers follows to determine criminal action.

Highway to be Constructed in Postwar Era

The Vernal Manila highway project valued above half a million was endorsed as a major postwar state road commission project at a conference in Vernal on December 21 with county commissioners and district engineer FM Deming present. The Lapoint road ranked second. deputies were named for assessment. a health nurse contract was set for 1944. livestock levies for 1944 detailed for horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and swine with values and rates established by the county.

Naples Special reports the funeral of Mrs Sisannkh Harker Richards held Wednesday afternoon at the Naples Chapel. Bishop LaVell Manwar ing presided with choir and speakers Archis Johnson Joseph Ci Byron Goodrich. Interment at Vernal Memorial Park. pallbearers included Asher Manwaring and Charles Olsen. Survived by husband David L Richards and children Stella Hannah Lloyd Lyman Anderson Glen Knight Weldon plus six deceased siblings and a granddaughter Donnette Myers.
