Shale Gas Combustion Process Promises Cheap Oil Supply
Bureau of Mines officials describe a vertical gas combustion retort tested at Rifle as the most economical shale oil recovery method yet. It requires no water, uses recycled heat, and promises lower capital costs and higher throughputs. a 300 yard pilot plant may follow if confirmed, with potential one to two cent per gallon product-cost reductions. The plan targets western shale fields spanning Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado totaling over 16,000 square miles, to narrow the gap with petroleum oils.
