36 Foot Geological Cross Section at Field House Museum
The Utah Field House of Natural History displays a 36 foot long oil mural showing a northwest to southeast cross section of the Uinta mountains and basin. It spans 108 miles across the range and extends into Wyoming and the basin near the Rook Cliffs. The piece by the Untermann family features all four geologic eras and 26 formations, with fossils in 20 of them dating back 500 million years.

Oil Discovery Brings Breaks for Uintah Basin Utes
In northeast Utah the Uintah Basin yields its first oil boom as exploration proves oil beneath the Green River valleys and Uinta Basin lands. The first producing well exceeds 250 000 barrels in 18 months, signaling potential Ute financial futures. Geologic markers along the Vernal Manila highway guide visitors through 74 miles of formation cross sections.

Uinta Basin Oil Sparks Hope Amid Indian Reservation Struggles
Geologists note most reservoirs lie in marine deposits and older formations while Uinta Basin prospects seem deep. Carter Oil Company spudded but dry holes yielded oil shows prompting continued drilling into the Ute Tribal No. 1 with a 1633 barrel first test in 1949. Today more wells appear as Utah residents, especially the Ute Indians, watch the frontier oil boom.
