Overland Route to the West: Berthoud and Bridger’s Mountain Trail
Civil War era efforts aimed to connect Denver with Salt Lake City via a direct route. Berthoud and Bridger led expeditions from Empire to the Uintah Basin exploring passes and a potential Berthoud route, with Hughes and Russell backing the project. The plan spurred later wagon road attempts and eventual railroad interest, shaping Colorado’s western connection.
