Congress Sets Tone in Opening Session of Sixty Fleet

The Sixty fleet Congress opened in Washington with brief business and memorials. Senate and House adjourned after appointing a joint committee to notify the President and read tributes to recently deceased members. Deaths announced include Senators Daniel Virginia, McEnery Louisiana, Dolliver Iowa, and Clay Georgia. House welcomed Rep Clark of Missouri and new members Mitchell Massachusetts Massey Tennessee.

Vernal Opera House and Dance Hall Project Planned

A Vernal company plans an opera house and dance hall on the corner lot south of the Taylor rooming house. Architect W E Park of Salt Lake City designed it. R L Taylor contracted for $12,000, with completion by August 1 next year. The building features an octagonal maple dancing floor, a wide stage, dressing rooms, and interior finish of slash grain Oreton fir.

Controversy Over New Indian Agent at Tort Duchesne Post

A furor surrounds the possible appointment of a new Indian agent for the Tort Duchesne post after Captain Hall’s transfer to Honolulu. Acting agent Captain U J Brees may be replaced. several Colorado politicians pushed for a Denver man R E Leigh, but Senator Smoot countermanded the order. Names linked include Judge D M Fredi and LY O Green, though a change seems unlikely.

White girl found chained in Boston room

Boston police found a 23 year old white woman nearly unclothed and chained to a wall in a room at 63 Middlesex Street. She was restrained by a chain around her neck with hands tied behind her back, discovered by officers who forced entry to J H Taylor’s home amid a warrant related to cocaine sale. Taylor resisted and pointed a revolver but was overpowered.

Vernal Commercial Club Organized in Uintah County

A rousing meeting at the Uintah Abstract Company office formed the Vernal Commercial Club with over sixty in the first membership. An Advisory Board elected to guide the club fixed initiation at 350, dues 1.00 quarterly, and planned a county canvass for members while aiming to boost Uintah Basin prospects and outdoor appeal.
