Seminary Talkes Reach Trials At Vernal Seminaries
The first reading of 350 Declamation talks is completed at Vernal Seminaries. About seventy talks will be presented before judges on Thursday and Friday, who will rate originality, organization, subject matter and delivery. Superior ratings earn pins, with years of prior superior ratings marked by rubies or a pearl. A December 13 presentation in Ashley Stake wards and December 20 in Uintah Stake wards will showcase the superior talks. The program aims to give students experience in preparing and presenting worthwhile material, with principal Frank Walker noting all talks show preparation even if not all achieve a superior rating.

How Much Salt Do Cows Need in Feed and Water
A historical note discusses salt consumption by dairy cows at the 1939 and 1940 New York World's Fair exhibits showing 160 cows from five breeds. It reports average daily salt from grain with free block malt access and variance by breed, origin, and management. Reasons for differences include size, season, diet, water, and workload, with suggestions to tailor salt to each animal rather than relying on a standard one percent inclusion. It also cites a University of Illinois pasture versus dry lot trial indicating better recovery outcomes on pasture for shipping calves.
