Veral Men Claim Solution to Unemployment in Ashley Valley
John T. Pope and George Barker say every man in Ashley Valley can obtain good wages by panning along Green River. They return from an Experimental trial at the river where 114 days yielded about 12 in gold. 372 grains were extracted from 11 yards of dirt run through a device. The gold is worth $20 an ounce of 480 grains. Nat Hunting joined Pope and Barker on the trip. The sands are in Horechor Bend country, dirt 3 to 5 feet thick and 0.5 to 1 mile wide along the river. A small outfit costs about $1 per yard. extraction costs around 35 cents per yard. Pope claims an apparatus will remove all fine gold from the ore, after two months at river camps demonstrating the machine. Pope, formerly Uintah county sheriff and prosecutor, is described as a mining man of considerable experience.
