Officials warn that river flood waters and reservoir sites near Ashley valley risk control by financiers. Citizens are urged to form an irrigation district to secure water rights and fund dams, with a meeting set for August 21 at the courthouse to organize action.
A public mass meeting of all stock holders from the Itigation companies drawing water from the Ashley river and interested parties is set for August 21, 1912 at 7 pm in Vernal Utah. The purpose is to consider organizing an Irrigation District to increase water supply and reclaim arid lands plus any other business arising. GEO A SLAUGH, Sec.
The Nichola family led by Professor Nichols with three daughters and seven year old Loring Nichols perform at the Orpheus Monday and Tuesday nights August 19 and 20. Loring plays cornet, his sister plays saxophone, the older sisters piano and violin, and Prof Nichols clarinet. The show promises superb ensemble music and a rare entertainment for Vernal with the Daylight moving picture bill. Admission prices are 25, 35 and 50 cents.
Denver officials led by Pasuk A Wadleigh visited Vernal to inspect Ashley Valley and Uintah Basin freight potential. The tour included local leaders, an auto ride through the valley, and a plan to publish a 1400 word write up for the September Red Book as proof of the region’s railroad prospects.
The Uintah Basin fair will be held at Roosevelt in a unique special building planned by Mr Blackhurst. Central committee members include L M Winsor as chairman and R S Collett as secretary with others covering buildings, finance, stock, domestic science, art, sports, and Indian department. Local boards are forming in each community to organize booths, exhibits, and district prizes.
Nathan Thardy presented a four inch apricot sprig bearing 17 apricots to illustrate a heavy yield this season. The image highlights abundant fruit growth and strong orchard production.
Arthur V. Watkins of Vernal Utah was admitted as attorney and counselor at law at a Utah Supreme Court chambers session on August 31. He passed a special bar exam for Utah law students in Eastern law schools on August 2 and 4. Watkins, a native of Vernal, studied at Columbia University Law School and earned an LL B. He previously spent a year as a missionary in the Eastern States and served as New York representative for the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir. Watkins arrived in Vernal Sunday evening and opened a law office in the Johnson block.
Representatives of the Utah Board of the National Irrigation Congress are collecting and organizing exhibits for the Salt Lake City Congress linked to the state fair. Edward Taylor the state horticultural inspector will supervise display preparation under Orson Hewlett. Cups and cash prizes will reward notable county exhibits and product merit.
The Civic Betterment League will hold a meeting Monday night at eight o'clock. All officers and members are requested to be present.
A Republican County Convention will be held at the County Court House in Vernal Utah on Saturday August 24 1912 at 2 pm to choose eight delegates for the Republican state Convention in Salt Lake City on September 5 1912 and eight delegates for the Fourth Judicial District Republican Convention in Provo on September 4 1912 Precincts listed include Bridgeport North Ashley Dragon North Vernal Jensen Leeton Handlett Linwood South Ashley Fanila South Vernal Moffat South Vernal Cy Mountain Dell Taft Naples Whiterocks and Mountain Dell totaling 83 Delegates will be elected by precinct primaries and names forwarded to the Republican County Committee Secretary Joann Davis Chairman and Dr Young Jr Secretary.
A new act extends one year for homesteaders in Uintah Basin to file proof and pay five percent of land price. A second extension possible. Applies to lands formerly part of the Winter Grant. Adverse claims prior to passage remain unaffected. Approved July 20, 1912.
President Richard Leigh of Colorado Park Irrigation says water will be gunning in the canal within sixty nine days. Landowners should begin building laterals and plowing for fall grain as Deep Creek flume work nears completion and diversions from the Uintah river are connected.
Progressive County party members are urged to meet on Money Day August 19 at eight p m to elect precinct officers and delegates to the County Convention to be held August 26 at the County Court House in Vernal Utah. Delegates by precinct totals follow.
Officials and Commercial Club members outline plans to host more teachers students and visitors in Vernal Utah as schools open soon. They urge prompt enrollment improved accommodations and continued hospitality to attract future growth and dollars to the Utah Academy and local businesses.
Primary gatherings announced for North and South Vernal City districts to select delegates for the Republican County Convention to be held in Vernal Utah on August 24 1912. Dates set for August 22 at 8 PM with locations including the County Court House and Vernal Central Schoolhouse. District committee notes mention travel from St Louis to Watson and onward to Vernal.
Uintah Academy will operate on a five day school week this year with morning sessions starting at 9 o clock. The annual circular from the Vernal Express press has been issued and distributed. An Odd Fellows party visited Vernal, led by Grand Master Wm I Brereton of Provo and Grand Secretary Rey P A Simpkins of Salt Lake, with Richard Brereton and Hamsey Provo as chauffeur.
Public sale of three hundred thousand acres of Uintah Indian Reservation lands will occur October 8 at Provo under Taft and Secretary Fisher order. The nationwide sale includes 1.5 million acres in Wyoming Montana Utah and adjacent territories with prohibitions on bids above 64 acres per person and minimum prices from 60 cents to 150 dollars per acre. Principal buyers were Utah residents familiar with local conditions and grazing land quality is highlighted.
The Vernal Orpheus opened last Monday to a crowded audience admiring clear moving pictures. The program included A Puritan Courtship and two comedies Atikes Hera and Making Max of Hin, with plans to show The Coming of Columbus early September. Nichols family set as special headliners on August 19 and 20.
The Uintah County Beekeepers Association estimates needing seven thousand five gallon cans for the 1912 honey crop, totaling about 420000 pounds of export honey worth around 27000 dollars. Naples resident Alfred Powell notes a heavy harvest similar to last year. Opens September 9.
