The Uintah basin industrial center in Fort Duchesne hosts an annual August convention. The basin is a rich storehouse of gilsonite oil shale coal timber agriculture and grazing. Reports claim vast oil potential in the basin’s shale and other deposits may fuel future American industry.

Senator Smoot told Provo Rotary that current depressed metal prices, especially silver and copper, will likely rebound soon as Western efforts to boost silver use rise. He warned tariffs won't help, urged more production cuts in farming, and criticized debt cancellation while noting Utah needs new power sources and Flaming Gorge to advance industrial growth.

At a Uintah Sheep Grazers meeting held in the Uintah State Bank directors room on a Tuesday night the group voted to sponsor Eat More Lamb Week from August 23 to 30. Secretary J Clive Davis noted lamb consumption is about five pounds per capita while beef lags behind, and the campaign will run in Verna Duchesne Myton and Roosseit plus nearby Basin communities. Lambs are promoted as pure meat that lasts longer and digests easily.
Word reached locals that two large bears preying on sheep on the Uintah range north of Vernal were shot. One monster was killed by Seth Bullock, a local man, the other by a Colorado trapper. The pair were felled near Gilbert Peak about 20 miles from Fish Lake.
The Utah State Board of Equalization orders reductions in sheep values across most counties, with Uintah County exempt from a 16 percent or 1 percent cut. Purebred sheep face about 12 per head, range sheep roughly 6 per head, lowering total statewide assessed value by about 1.5 million dollars. Cattle assessments remain unchanged. The board kept overall state tax levies at 23 mills for general, 2.4 mills for high school, and 4.7 mills for the state district school fund.
