Recreation Camp Sites Planned in Ashley National Forest

Charles Genewax connected with the National Forest recreation work at Ogden and, with Supervisor James O Stewart, chose cannip Sites on north and south sides of the Ashley to be developed under Citizens Conservation Corps. Campground improvements include accessible sites, sanitation, fire protection, and prevention of misuse. Debris will be cleared, sites readied for outings, camp fires set, garbage pits built, and camp tables installed where possible. Roads will be built to each site, expanding suitable recreational areas. more camps may be improved if time allows.

Curry Mere Company Store at Ouray Changes Hands

The Curry Mercantile Company store at Ouray, Indiana trading post, was purchased by Clifford A Broome who took possession on August 1. The business, begun in 1835 by Oran Curry as The Kentucky Store, expanded after family leadership and rival stores. Broome, long time chief clerk since 1909, will run the new CC 4 Brooms Store with L T Bennett as clerk. Mrs Bennett will run the Ouray hotel. Mr and Mrs Albert Murray will leave the hotel, and Mr Murray plans to move to Vernal.

Tax levies set by county and city officials

County commissioners set 91 mills for general funds 25 sinking 40 indigent 04 binary 03 exhibition 02 old age 02. District school levy 125 mills plus 03 for binary. State tax 96 mills for 1933. Vernal City council fixed city levy at 16 mills at a recent meeting.

Uintah County Commissioners Hold Meeting Actions Taken

The Uintah County board met with all officers present. The UB IC finance committee sought $160 more to reach $200, which the board did not grant. The Vernal First ward rodeo committee requested rodeo grounds prep and posts for September 14 15 and 38, to be provided by the committee. Byron Thomas and George Beck pressed Dry Fork road repairs and a bridge work funded by the Relief committee, to which officers pledged effort. The board approved buying office supplies and stamped envelopes for tax notices at 225. The county clerk was asked to obtain library board books for audit before the next meeting. Several tax schedule queries were reviewed. County Attorney H W Colton issued a ruling on garnishment of wages for counts employees.

Funeral Rites Held for J L Oakeson in Vernal

J L Oakeson funeral rites were held at Congregational Church with Rev Geo E Guild officiating. A large gathering of old friends attended as music was provided by a local quartet and Miss Hoeft sang Face to Face. Burial followed at Rock Point cemetery under the direction of the Souain Funeral Home.

Opening Uintah High School September 18 19

The Uintah Board of Education met with full membership and Superintendent Oliver Olson and Clerk Mrs Paul Stevenson Lester Bingham discussed purchasing Dry Fork school building for community use. A bus service request from Fort Duchesne and a teacher change from Glines were held for later. Byron Thomas bus driver request from Dry Fors. free transportation for high school students approved. Inspections of district schools led to Uintah High opening September 18 and all elementary schools September 25. teacher lists incomplete but forthcoming.

Ranger Glenn Lambert of the Ashley National Forest was sent to the District Office in Ogden by Supervisor James O Stewart where he boarded a waiting airplane and was taken to the Coals National Forest in Idaho to help fight fires. Stewart says lightning alarms many fires but in most cases it is carelessness of man.

Uintah Basin oil and rock asphalt highway plan

Lewis C Karrick outlines a Utah Basin study showing rock asphalt from Sunnyside could lay roads at lower cost than oiling, with a permanent surface near Vernal and White Rocks. He urges Vernal officials and Don B Colton to fund a Basin highway material program using federal and industrial recovery funds to keep money local and start a new oil and asphalt industry.

Fish and Game Department Missing From UBIC Convention

Henry B Millecam of the Vernal Gun and Rifle Club revoked Newell B Cook's state fish and game commission. The department cannot participate in UBIC this year due to reduced funds. Cook asks Millecam to include UBIC in next year’s annual budget. The gatherings highlight fish and game work and Basin resource conservation.

Boy Scouts Build Own Room in New Chapel

In Vernal First Ward, Boy Scouts led by Harold Lundell moved over 1200 wheelbarrow loads of dirt to excavate a Scout room beneath the chapel rostrum. The 18 by 34 foot space will feature exterior north entry and three or four patrol rooms with lockers, a home they will complete themselves.

District Court Meets Tuesday for Probate and Motions

Judge Abel Turner of the fourth judicial district will convene court internal to hear probate and law and motion cases. Turner expects to clear the calendar for the regular term of court in September.

Infantry Regimental Band to Perform at UBI Con on August 9 10 12

Warrant Officer L A Yost conductor of the 38th US Infantry Regimental Band plans concerts at the UBI, August 9 10 and 12. The program includes Let Me Call You Sweetheart and Springtime in the Rockies. Uintah High and Buchesne High bands join in the program with marching pieces and overtures, all leading to the Governor Day parade on August 10.

Clara Colton of Vernal Uintah High School has been named the 1933 recipient of the Utah State Agricultural College scholarship for outstanding students. Ernest Henderson of Vernal is an alternate. The scholarship will be awarded at the college opening on September 24.
