News from Jackson Mississippi reports a feared race war plot in Simpson County. Secret meetings planned murder and arson against white residents. A white attendee overheard the plot, a fiery speech by a black woman urged white murders, and mobs whipped several leaders. A black woman was abducted and presumed lynched.
A clash between U S soldiers guarding Rock Island Railway property and South Enid, Oklahoma, men occurred near Wichita early today. Corporal Gleaves was fatally wounded, soldiers dispersed the mob, several rioters were arrested, restraining orders were issued to 150 South Enid citizens, and Richard Corwin was arrested over a Round Pond wreck.
Moroni Mason of Ogden was accused of beating his mother with a fence picket during a liquor fueled dispute. Police hunted him for days, he pled guilty to assault, but the court found a graver charge and bound him over to the grand jury on a deadly weapon assault with intent to do great bodily harm. He remains in jail pending further proceedings.
A subterranean natural gas well near Coffeyville Kansas exploded between 1 and 2 AM causing a bright illumination and ground tremors. Rocks showered from the well, a 30 pound rock nearly hit a resident, and thirty acres around the site were torn up with boulders and deep holes. No injuries were reported.
