Vernal Manila highway contract set for Oct 1

Senator Wallace F Bennett says contracts for the Vernal Manila forest highway will be let on October 1 with funds available. The project, raised in cost from 240000 to 395000 after upgrading to a Class 1 forest road, aims to speed Flaming Gorge development and access the Flaming Gorge area, with most work in spring 1958.

Vernal Father Dies in Meeker Oil Well Accident

James Soderstrom, 30, of Vernal, Utah, died instantly when a pipe fragment struck his skull and chest on a Phillips rig eight miles west of Meeker, Colorado. Vaughan, also injured, was taken to Meeker Hospital. Soderstrom leaves a widow Beverly Frances and two children. body to be taken to Bowman, North Dakota for services.

Vernal All Stars Shine in Western League Tourney

Vernal All Stars from the Western Little League played in Heber regional games. They beat Morgan 14 3 then lost to Wasatch National League 3 2 in the finals. Curg Belcher homered twice against Morgan, while Roger Tullis pitched Monday and Kenny Davis on Tuesday. Umpire Ken Schulsen called Belcher the most promising player seen this year. Local managers praised team work and listed many players and supporters by name.

New Gilsanite Development Forecast Boosts Uintah Basin Economy

A new Gilganite plant in Cola will inaugurate the first private commercial operation to produce high octane gasoline from solid gilsonite ore. Officials including Secretary of the Interior Frederick A. Seaton and Utah Governor George D. Clyde attend, highlighting the venture's $18 million scale and its output of metallurgical coke. The project uses a 72 mile pipeline from the Bonanza mine to deliver gilsonite slurry, promising substantial economic expansion for the Uintah Basin.

Abandoned Uintah Railroad Echoes In $2 Million Gilsonite Pipeline

Vernal resident W A Banks recalls the Uintah Railroad era as a $2 million pipeline to move gilsonite slurry from Bonanza to Gilsonite refinery reuses the old route. The line began in 1903 04 hauling gilsonite and diverse freight, with passengers mail and a telegraph network. Government takeover ended passenger service around 1938 36. Banks notes earlier telephone line construction and a dirt road from Dragon to Vernal and Bonanza to Ft Duchesne, reflecting a bygone transport era.

Vernal Man Hurt By Falling Tree Near Sawmill

Charles Hadlock of 475 East North was injured when a tree dislodged by a winch truck struck him at the Standard Saddle Tree sawmill near Trout Creek. He spent five days in the hospital and has begun recovering at home with severe back bruises.

Parallel Completion Planned by S. L. Pipeline Co

S L Pipeline Co plans parallel completion between Ran ely and Salt Lake City by November first. C V Saxter, VP, states the parallel pipeline will raise capacity of the ten inch line from 2 500 to 70 000 barrels daily. The line was looped years ago to increase capacity.

Gulf Oil Finds Oil Zone In Uintah County Well

Gulf Oil Corp reports a significant oil discovery at its Wonsls Unit No 1 wildcat between the Bren dan Bottoms pool and Red Wash Field in Uintah County. The well, in 11 section 1 township 8 south range 21 east, tests a zone in the Green River formation. Early estimates suggest reserves potentially exceeding 109 million barrels.

Provo Iron Works Submits Low Bid On Damsite Tank

Provo Iron Works submitted the apparent low bid of 47218 dollars for furnishing materials and erecting a 500000 gallon insulated steel water storage tank at Flaming Gorge damsite. Bids opened in the Vernal office of the Bureau of Reclamation. Other bidders included Nelson Bros. Const. Co. and Thaya Construction Co. Both firms are located in East Lake City.

Colorado Governor Leads River Trip to Study Echo Park Dam

Governor Stephen McNichols of Colorado will join Utah officials and state lawmakers on a Green River voyage Saturday to assess Echo Park Dam impacts on fly fishers and the regional economy in northwest Colorado. The roster includes Lt. Governor Frank Haya and several senators and representatives from Colorado and Utah, plus agency staff and business representatives.

Mining methods transform Bonanza gilsonite operations

Newsmen from Uintah Basin and Salt Lake City visit American Gilsonite at Bonanza where 130 plus workers are employed. The refinery and coke plant receive ore via jet cutting and water-assisted mining, using pumps, carbide drills, and hydraulic jumbs to lift ore from 64 foot wide chambers to a drying plant for processing.
