Abandoned Uintah Railroad Echoes In $2 Million Gilsonite Pipeline
Vernal resident W A Banks recalls the Uintah Railroad era as a $2 million pipeline to move gilsonite slurry from Bonanza to Gilsonite refinery reuses the old route. The line began in 1903 04 hauling gilsonite and diverse freight, with passengers mail and a telegraph network. Government takeover ended passenger service around 1938 36. Banks notes earlier telephone line construction and a dirt road from Dragon to Vernal and Bonanza to Ft Duchesne, reflecting a bygone transport era.
