Bonanza Coking Plant Plans to Double Uintah Payroll

Bonanza Coking Plant seeks to double Uintah county payroll if gilsonite coking tests prove favorable. John Baker of American Gilsonite says a 1000 ton per day plant could cost 6 to 10 million dollars with 50 new jobs and a 60 foot coking tower. Seven gilsonite runs have been processed in a test, yielding high grade coke used by aluminum mills and gas production for gasoline.

Alma Sonne and Roy W. Coxy to Speak at Stake Conference

Alma Sonne and Roy W. Coxy are listed as speakers for the Uintah Stake quarterly conference. Two Accidents Reported in Utah County Friday

Two traffic accidents occurred in Utah County last Friday, per the Utah State Highway Patrol. Max Ry son Holbrook, 1954 Tudor sedan driver, rammed a node near Vernal on US 1000, causing about $300 damage. a cow was not killed. Earlier, Frank Bridgelaw’s truck left the road, overturned into a fence, and destroyed the cab. driver cited for failure to maintain control. Investigating officer Lowell Bair reported.

Indians Rob Soldier At Knife Point

Ouray Indians robbed a US Air Force private at knife point early this morning near Ouray Junction on US 550. Suspects Ace Willis Thompson aged 19 and Robert Jenks aged 23 were charged with armed robbery after forcing Pvt Albert Deans to surrender $1800 and dropping him near Vernal following a ride on the Ouray road. Police reported pursuit and investigation ongoing.

Desertion suspect arrested in Naples and other Utah area briefs

A 21 year old Ft Ord California serviceman was arrested in Naples on desertion charges by Deputy Sheriff George Lamoreaux. The Marine Recruiting Service will visit Vernal on May 6 to interview locals about enlisting. Lions Club district events drew 100 attendees in Helper and surrounding towns. Doe's Beach Fire Burns Trees and Shrubs

A mile long ice destroyed pines and cottonwood trees in a canyon south of Doe's Beach on Tuesday afternoon. Vernal City fire department received the call around 2 p.m. They fought the blaze for two hours, hampered by strong winds, after a trash fire near the Tat Christensen place got out of hand. Firemen arrived as flames burned near the resort area. No injuries or carriage reported.
