Edgar Michaud Leads Local Draft Party for Fort Benjamin Harrison

Edgar Michaud, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Michaud from Van Buren, heads a three man draft party bound for mobilization camp with Fred King of Jonesboro and Richard Chaplin of Upland. They board at Marion and receive orders to ensure discipline and no liquor on trains. Local Board No. 2 also notes another twenty men from the district will be called on Sept 19.

Sixty Four Hogs Bring Big Sum in Van Buren Sale

Joseph Ward sold sixty four Poland China hogs to Howard and Williamson stock dealers of this city. The average weight was 270 pounds, total 17 20 pounds, at 18 cents per pound. The $3,110 40 sale price set a new high for a single car shipment from this market and proved Ward’s breeding acumen.

Van Buren Township Schools Readiness for Opening

The Van Buren Township schools will open Monday September 10. All students in high school and grades must attend to complete registration on the first day. Transfer papers for out of township high school students should be secured and filed with the superintendent.

Threshing Rings Enjoy Ice Cream Socials After Harvest

The Black Creek threshing ring finished work on Sept. 4 1917 at Wm Bray’s with ten thousand bushels threshed and captaincy kept by Wm Bray. Fifteen gallons of ice cream and cakes capped the celebration with estimates of top ice cream eaters Wesley Schrock and John Baker. The Plummers Chapel crew led by Sherman Lee and Volney Zent also held a social with twenty gallons of ice cream and fifteen cakes at the Etler home. Many local families attended and enjoyed music by Richards and brothers.

Marshall Reunion Brings Families to Warren Fair Grounds

The Marshall Roberta and Sparks families hold their second reunion at the Warren fair grounds on the fourth Sunday in September the 23rd. Relatives are asked to notify others so all may learn the date and attend with full representation. Geo. C. Chambers presides and Alfred Chopson serves as secretary.

Town Board Plans Alley Sewer From South First to East First

At a recent meeting the town board decided to construct a sewer in the alley between Main and Vine from South First to East First, extending north to Rood's Run. A special session Friday night September 7 will hold a hearing unrelated to the sewer. Work must complete before spring when the new library starts.

Daughtrey Family Ends Move Plans Takes Over Farm

Dr. L C Daughtrey and his wife and son announced they would remain in the township after an abrupt shift from selling household goods to taking charge of the Daughtrey farm one mile north and a quarter mile east of Landessville. Doc remains available as a veterinary surgeon via the Landess phone with reverse charges.

The tenth annual Doyle family reunion will be held at Doyle grove on South First Street in Vac. Bures on September 9. All relatives and friends are invited to attend.
