Mass Draft Registration Set for September 12

On Thursday of next week a nationwide draft registration will occur for 13,000,000 men aged 18 to 45, excluding those already in military service. Governors supervise state registration with adjutant generals as central admin authority, while local boards oversee immediate operations.

Local Schools Opened Monday in Van Buren

Van Buren public schools opened Monday with fair attendance. High school enrollment matches last year. Texts arrived after a brief delay and the course of study was revised. Some compulsory subjects become optional and more practical courses added across grades nine to twelve.

Liberty Guards Organization Grows Encouraging Support

The Liberty Guards advance with rising numbers as many eligible townspeople have yet to join. The movement aims to measure support and encourage patriotic participation. Guard members cannot be called for duty outside the state. Drills under Mr. Thompson are good exercise and urged for all able to take part. Most stores will close Monday and Thursday evenings from 6:45 to 8.

Registration places for men 18 to 45 in Van Buren township

All men aged 18 to 45 residing in Van Buren township must register at specified precincts. First Precinct in the rear room of Farmers Trust Co with James E. Riley as registrar. Second Precinct in News-Eagle office with C. R. Witmer as registrar. Third Precinct in the rear room of Van Buren State Bank with Rev. J. O. Campbell as registrar. Patriots will register others must.

Thirty Six More 10 Camp Taylor Entrains from Gas City

Thirty six more men entrained at Gas City this morning under Grant county district No 2. The group included Van Buren townships and a new Liberty Guards company in bright uniforms almost fifty strong. Captain Thompson praised rapid progress after little more than a week of organizing and a few drill sessions. Uniforms were fitted by Price Clothing Company Marion with fifty four ordered. Local Gas City preparations for a fitting farewell were noted along with numerous town notables associated with progressivism. The roster of entrained men lists names from Van Buren VanValer Leach and others, plus residents from Swayzee Jonesboro Muncie Fairmount Converse Upland and Mt Vernon Ohio.

The United States government orders a 15 percent cut in paper use for papers like News-Eagle to conserve scarce stock. Subscriptions must be prepaid by September 15 or be dropped. after that date unpaid lists will be revised and continued failure to pay may be reported to the War Industries Board.
