County commissioners approved the primary election bills totaling 6794.57 dollars. First choice governor vote tally reached 7687 across parties, costing about 88 cents per vote. Redistricting Grant county cut precincts from 84 to 66 and trimmed bills, saving about 3000 dollars.
Indianapolis reports Gov Samuel M. Ralston appoints Thomas Taggart to fill the late Benjamin Shively’s U.S. Senate seat. Taggart receives numerous congratulations and plans to travel to Washington soon. swearing in anticipated next Monday.
Ohio Oil company in Montpelier announced a ten cent increase. Indiana crude jumped from $1.48 to $1.58, while North and South Lima markets rose to $1.72. Prices now exceed all previous records with outlook for further gains.
The notice touts J. C. C. Cor sets at McDougle's and borzell Harvey rubber boots at 350. It promotes subscribing through News Eagle and notes a complete hosiery spring stock from W A Paxton Co and Wo Shirts available at Boxell & Harvey, urging immediate purchase before prices rise.
Miss Marguerite Lugar, 35, killed herself at her Landesaville home Sunday. The widow of Joseph Lugar’s son and granddaughter of Mary Lugar, she left a note naming pallbearers and burial wishes before hanging herself from a rafter in the wood shed. Coroner’s verdict: death by own action from a cause unknown. pallbearers include Thelma Pierson Thelma Tinkle Ethel Tinkle Nellie Carey Mable Arnett Doris Long Mary Nicewanger Lea Nicewanger.
Dr A L Worster a veterinary surgeon and dentist from Warren has established practice in Van Buren at the Johnson tie barn on North First street. He brings thirty years of experience and plans to move his family here as soon as school ends, becoming permanent residents.

Multiple churches in Van Buren suffered wind damage including the Methodist church with a blown down belfry and a shattered west window. The U B church, a frame structure, sustained considerable damage, and the new Church of Christ on East Main street lost its belfry with minor losses.
In Van Buren the greatest property damage occurred on west Main street. Cline Lumber Co. suffered about 3000 dollars in losses as timbers flew and the plant building was blown apart. Homes were wrecked by flying debris and windows blown in. Mrs. Q A Mathias suffered a cut from glass and a veranda was torn away. Voris Karney was struck by a falling timber on the stairs, and Lloyd Pilkington’s home suffered slate damage from the high school. C O Nelson freed a trapped horse team from a collapsed barn, with another team lost at Farnshell’s farm south of town as the barn fell.
A Wednesday evening wedding at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Boxell joined their daughter Ethel to Lora Tinkie. Rev. John Clawson performed the ceremony. The bride wore a light blue silk gown with chiffon trim. The couple will reside on a farm southeast of Landers where the groom has prepared a home. Both are well known socially and in church circles. the bride is from the 1914 township graduating class.
Petroleum lays out big plans for the United Brethren District 10 conference to be held there on Wednesday and Thursday March 20 and 30. The meetings begin Wednesday evening and run through Thursday evening with a full program announced.
The Clover Leaf passenger train The Commercial Traveler due at 10 33 pm was struck by a cyclone at Scout's Crossing five miles west of Van Buren Tuesday night. The engine and rear coach remained on track while the rest were blown off. About 40 injured, two seriously, all taken to Marion hospital. Brakeman Mr Moore from the city sustained slight injuries.
The men's and women's classes of the Methodist Sunday school began a contest over possession of the recitation room used for worship. Both sides aim to win and increase attendance, after the room was previously allocated to the men despite large women’s class turnout. Attendance last Sunday reached an even ten.
The township Sunday school convention program was prepared at Van Buren State Bank. It lists congregational singing, invocation by Rev. Plunkett, quartet singing, an address by Chas. Stewart of Marion on increasing Sabbath school attendance, a discussion, music, discussion of topics, appointment of a committee for township officers, and benediction.
Harry Bowser, noted lecturer and humorist, appeared at the opera house Friday night delivering The Philosophy of Fun or Heart Smiles. The hour and a half program drew laughs and praise, with Bowser urging moral reflection. He may return for the graduation commencement with Brain Cells.
