Carl L Trimmer Dies in Vancouver
Carl Leroy Trimmer, 28, of Bluffton, died Saturday afternoon in Vancouver barracks Washington while serving in the spruce service after leaving Blufft February 13. Survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. George Trimmer Route 2 Van Buren three sisters Myrtle Cloud Golda Wescoe Charm at home and one brother Ernest Trimmer. Remains to be returned home for interment.

District conscription boards ordered to send final draft quota
Various district conscription boards in the state must send the final 35 percent of their drafted men to army camps by March 28 under first draft regulations. Grant county’s first district will forward 45 men to the second district including Gas City Jonesboro Fairmount Upland Van Buren and nearby towns. Fairmount has already sent its full quota and has no further call.

Marion and Bluffton Traction Rate Increase Hearing
The Marion and Bluffton Traction Company seeks to raise passenger rates from 2 to 2 1 2 cents per mile with a 5 percent round trip reduction. Filed January 26 1918 the hearing is set for April 4 1918 at 10 o clock a m at the Public Service Commission office Indianapolis. A detailed inventory of all property must be filed by April 3 1918.

Independents Defeat Montpelier in Rough Contested Game
The Independents defeated the Montpelier Independents 27 to 17 at Montpelier. The first half was 9 to 7 before Montpelier rallied in the second half to finish seven points back. The Montpelier team will return to play here Saturday, March 30, with Van Buren players Banter Creviston Doyle Ferguson Melling Duckwall and Baker. Referee Merrell. Cars carried the teams to the game. This was the second meeting in the series.

Clothing Needed for Belgians Urgently
Red Cross seeks used but serviceable clothing to ship to the Belgian relief commission in Binghamton New York for delivery to occupied Belgium and France. The national goal is 10 000 tons with Lake division a 950 ton quota. Van Buren requests washed cast offs this week for next shipment.

Van Buren Plans for Carnegie Library Begin Soon
The town of Van Buren advances a new ten thousand dollar Carnegie library with plans by architect Hiram Elder and contractor August Reudlinger. The 33 by 59 foot building will sit on the Peters lot opposite Breedlove’s and include a 200 seat auditorium and rest rooms. Work is to start soon and be rushed to finish. In other news a roof fire at the Sam Brewer home caused minor damage, extinguished by onlookers. insurance will cover the loss.
