The Old Fashioned Fourth of July in Van Buren is set to be a great event this year with a mammoth crowd anticipated. The Fairmount Band, regarded as one of the best in the state, will provide music along with a martial band and possibly some jazz. Numerous contests will entertain and educate attendees throughout the day.
A patriotic program in Van Buren on Monday July 5 features speaker Hon. R J Bobby Burns of Butler Indiana and Rev L A Swisher D D of Huntington with a daylong schedule of contests including high jump broad jump sack race and baby carriage race plus a baseball game and prizes.
A poem praising the American flag as it travels across wilderness seas and sands. It speaks of the flag’s presence in battles, graves, and distant lands, weaving imagery of red white and blue guiding a starry path and honoring national pride. It inspires to mark the routes the flag has yet to traverse.
In a letter to Editor E H DePoy of the Van Buren News Eagle Reynolds treasurer expresses appreciation for agricultural coverage. He pledges cooperation from the state organization and offers to provide latest news on farming activities to boost publicity and address farmers’ concerns.

A strange elderly man arrives with an odd motor vehicle, Banjo in hand, and demonstrates an automatic electric post hole digger. The device bores a two and a half foot hole in seconds, throws dirt over the crowd, and malfunctions spectacularly. John Hodson buys it for 94 dollars and uses it to dig five holes before losing control. it wanders, bores through a stove, and ends up hidden in Hodson's attic. Henry Endsley rages, vowing to smash the machine if found.
The Weesner family gathered at Mrs. Elizabeth Weesner’s home 504 Bond Avenue Marion on Sunday to honor her son Wallace and his family as they move to Pueblo Colorado where Mr. Weesner will serve as manager and buyer in the domestic and wash goods department of the Pueblo Store Co. He previously held the same role at Blumenthal Co. for eleven and a half years. The list of attendees continues on page eight.
William Stimax died at his daughter Mrs. C. L. Bockmier’s home in this city Tuesday evening June 22 at 7 20 after a six month decline from heart leakage and other diseases. He was 69, born in Baltimore and long a county farmer. Survived by widow and three children Mrs. C L Bockmier Mrs Snyder near Upland and George Stimax. Funeral Friday at 2 30 p m at the Bockmier residence near Upland with Rev. S F Harter of the Van Buren M E Church officiating. interment in Van Buren cemetery.
Jake Kahlenbeck sustained a painful injury while loading wood at the saw mill on Wednesday evening. A falling log chunk weighing about 25 pounds struck him above the left temple, knocking him unconscious before a doctor treated the wound. he is able to be around today.
Breedlove Brothers sold a Mo line tractor to the National Soldiers Home at Marion after seven competitors bid. The Breedloves express satisfaction at convincing Soldiers Home management of their machine’s merits.
