Samuel Renick reports from France in May 1918 that his battery won a competitive drill, being the first to fire for the 150th regiment of Field Artillery. He mentions Hartford City comrades and a boxed letter back home to Milton Camblin, city clerk.
Winona showcases a strong program with patriotic and military features. Notable speakers include William J. Bryan and J Wilbur Chapman while travel restrictions keep some abroad speakers home to deliver lectures. Evangelistic services run June 30 to July 15 and the assembly from July 15 to August 15.
The second conscription district of Grant county will furnish thirty-seven additional men for the army who will entrain at Upland next Wednesday, June 26, and be sent to Camp Sherman in Chillicothe, Ohio. Names include Ralph Pry and Chas Ruley, with substitutes listed for illness or inability to travel.
Dr W W Mott township War Savings chair reports Wilson’s call to buy War Savings Stamps. June 28 mass meetings to tally tax payers and wage earners, with pledged purchases through year end. Nonparticipants or refusals to sign pledges will be reported to authorities and could face government action. Card index of township addresses is being compiled.
Members of the K P and I O O F lodges held a joint memorial service at the Methodist Church. They met at lodge rooms, marched to the church where Rev. W T Arnold delivered the address. Afterward they marched to the cemetery to decorate the graves of deceased members.
A War Savings Enlistment Day notice from Paxton's Drug Store offers payment for any kind of clean bottles. The event is set for June 28.
Rev. John C. White of Marion delivered a stirring address to students as the Van Buren township commencement at the opera house celebrated 29 graduates. Lucile Stackhouse won the gold medal in the declamatory contest with Delores Doyle as runner up amid strong music by the Baskette quartet and Lines orchestra.
Sarah A. Herring Riggs died after a long illness at age 72 in 1918 after moving to Grant county with her parents in 1855. She married Sameus M. Riggs in 1867 and had four children C V Riggs C J Riggs Clara M Bell and Pearlie M Coomler. She joined the United Brethren Church in 1885 and remained a faithful member until death. Funeral services were held at the U B Church in Warren with burial in Jones cemetery.
A Red Cross package to Forrest D Higgins of the 28th U S Infantry A E F is acknowledged in a May 6 1918 letter. Higgins speaks of his good morale and fair time under the circumstances while thanking the sender and wishing prosperity from the war front.
