Miss Clattie Beekman Burned In Oil Explosion

Fifteen year old Miss Clattie Beekman suffered severe burns when an oil can explosion at a farm home east of Van Buren ignited flames on her left arm and leg. Her mother and sister were also burned while helping to extinguish the fire. Dr Toney treated the victims and all were reported reasonably well.

Miss Martha Beasley of Van Buren wed Mr. Boyd Atwell of Colingo California at the Methodist parsonage on May 29 with Rev L A Levits officiating. The bride, a 1913 graduate and K K club member, wore white charmeuse. The groom, son of Mrs J M Atwell, is with Southern Pacific Oil at Colingo. They plan to live in Colingo.

Fire Traps in Fowlerton Face Removal and Repair

The Matthews Progress urges action as Fowlerton's town board condemns worn old buildings that menace nearby properties and orders removal or repair of dangerous firetraps on the brick street and other areas. Van Buren needs similar laws.

Township graduate prize list announced for June 17

Robert Pilkington of City Drug Store will award a fine toilet set to the township graduate with the highest grade in the recent examination. Superintendent Terrell will announce grades at the commencement on June 17. M. Myer of Marion will present a gold medal to the oratorical contest winner.

Lock-Up Conditions Reported by Grant County Board

The Grant County Board of Charities and Corrections reports on county lockups and institutions. Estimable Lady Rachel Griffin Black passes away in Van Buren

Rachel A. Griffin born March 26 1838 near Centerville Indiana died May 3 1913 at her daughter’s home in Van Buren aged 75 years 2 months and 2 days She was married to Daniel T Black on September 3 1855 and both attended the Physio medical College of Cincinnati They practiced medicine in Marion Indiana Fort Jefferson Ohio later She leaves three children and a large extended family after a long life of learning and Bible study She passed peacefully after eight weeks of illness and is survived by her daughters Mrs G A Landess and Mrs J B Riley and son Dr B E S Black plus fourteen grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.
