Voters urged to support contestants by订 subscriptions with ballots due by 7 30 p m on July 25. A special $10 gold prize is awarded to the top count on July 2 and final results, including piano prizes, will be decided after July 28. A warding committee is named and local merchants are listed to supply coupons.
Rube Wilkins a local advertiser known for stunts was arrested in Van Buren after distributing bills without a license. Marshal Roberts chased the culprit to Upland where Wilkins and his driver were arrested and later returned to Van Buren. Charges included unlicensed distribution, speeding, and resisting an officer, but were not pursued after court costs.
Marshall Roberts recovered a wagon and team belonging to Charles Oliver of Landersville. Huggins was arrested in Hartford City and the property returned. After release Huggins charged Roberts and Oliver with impersonating officers, charges dismissed, but Roberts later arrested Huggins on the original horse stealing charge and Bond set at 300 dollars for circuit court.
Members meet at the club room Monday evening July 20, 1914 at 8 o clock for important business. By order of M. B. Crist, President.
Quincey Eubanks, famed poultry doctor, performed a remarkable operation on a young pullet. He removed the crop, extracted two strings of banana peel and a rubber boot fragment, sewed the crop, and placed the pullet back in care. The bird recovered fully despite Eubanks having only one arm.
A long list of candidates is shown with names and residences across Van Buren Marion Milo Montpelier Warren and other towns. Several entries include street or route numbers and women prominent in the local announcements. The slate features Mrs M L Bockmier Zelda Line Elsie Cruse Elizabeth Palmer and many others.
A threshing operation near Van Buren was engulfed by flames destroying a new threshing machine owned by Matt Nelson and Levi Conley, two wagons, 170 bushels of wheat, 300 bushels in shocks, and about 100 bushels more in burned sacks. Several workers, including Mrs. Leo Wilson and Miss Gladys Wilson, were overcome but not seriously injured. The fire spread across five to six acres of shocked wheat, and insurance covered some losses on wagons. Children’s Day observances at St. Joseph church followed on Sunday July 12 with a large audience and thanks to several helpers and donors.
Mrs Martha A Feighner widow of Adam J Feighner died at 7 p m Sunday at her Washington township residence after a year long illness of paralysis. Funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon at the home conducted by Revs R A Bennett and George Myers. Survived by son Albert L Feighner three brothers and one sister. She had lived in Washington township for fifty two years.
