E Bert Kern in charge at Lonely Station on the Cotton Belt route was killed defending company property. A white assailant robbed him, then struck him with a hammer before a hand to hand struggle. Albert Doyle of Van Buren resigned as traveling auditor for the state board of accounts to become assistant cashier at the First National Bank in Marion.
